You can't control what others think or do, but you can minimize conflict by taking responsibility for your actions and reactions.

It is a fact of nature that people don't always get along or agree on everything. Conflict will be minimized if the climate in the work place puts people at ease and permits real feelings to be expressed.

- treat others with respect and consideration
- use communication tools that minimize defensiveness and miscommunication
- recognize and control your "knee-jerk" reactions
- negotiate agreements that are Win-Win
- continue to develop a trusting relationship with the people you work with

Treat others with respect and consideration . . .

Convincing another person to do something involves saying and doing the things that cause others to want to do what you want them to do.

- If you put another person on the defensive, you will NOT succeed in convincing them of anything!
- If you are belittle the opinions of others, argumentative and always sure of your own viewpoint, the other person will feel hostile toward you.
- If you are friendly, appeal to others' desire for fairness and excellence, request advice where appropriate, acknowledge effort, and sympathize with his real issues, you will have better chance of changing his thinking.
- People tend to agree with, and like listening to, information that makes them feel worthwhile.

You may think the other person is wrong, but it's very important to understand that what they do and say makes sense to them!

Care Less What Others Think

Do you worry what other people think and ignore your own opinion?

Do you find yourself trying to work out how other people will feel about a decision rather than considering your own point of view?

Of course we all need to consider other people to be decent and sensitive. But if we care too much what other people think we live by our imaginations of others thoughts! Do you really want to live like that?

To be a truly independent and self-confident person you need to start being more self-directed. What do you think? What do you want? What is your opinion?

When you start to care less what others think you'll start living your life not a dim reflection of what someone else thinks your life should be.

Other people often have it wrong!
The Beatles were initially rejected by music promoters, as late as the sixties many were still saying that putting a man on the moon was an impossibility. People laughed at Douglas Bader when he said he wanted to fly again after losing both legs after being shot down over Germany in WW2. Despite public opinion he went on to be one of the greatest flying aces. Did he care what others thought?

Public opinion is notoriously unreliable. Trust yourself more!

When you care too much what others think you are open to manipulation because you will tend to go with the herd. When you care less what other people think you become a more honest, and therefore decent, person because you don't have to pretend so much.

Your Personal Profile

Life for some time now has been somewhat depressing and you feel 'under the weather'. You are looking for a means by which you can escape from all the pressures of everyday life. But you must remember that the 'Past does not equal 'Tomorrow'. You are seeking a way to escape from all the trials and tribulations that oppress you at this time, but at least you haven't given up - if one pattern of behaviour doesn't seem to work then you'll change it for another.

You are a very warm and emotional individual but unfortunately in the past too many people have taken advantage of this sensitive trait. You need aesthetic surroundings, or an equally sensitive and understanding partner with whom to share a warm understanding.

You are not an argumentative sort of person and 'rather than fight - you'd switch' (an old cigarette ad cliche). But when you try to assert yourself - as sometimes you may try to do - you meet with so much resistance and effrontery that manifests itself so obviously that you become hurt, indignant and resentful. So in order to have peace and quiet you tend to become inhibited. You keep it all to yourself but deep down, you 'feel' and 'hurt' a lot.

You are an emotional, sincere and impressionable individual experiencing frustration and unnecessary stress. You vehemently resist any form of pressure from outside sources, insisting on your independence as an individual. You want to be a decision maker - to make up your own mind without interference. You wish to be able to draw your own conclusions and arrive at your own decisions. You detest uniformity and mediocrity as you want to be regarded as one who gives authoritative opinions. Your favourite expression could well be that 'I may not always be right but I am never wrong'. You're a perfectionist and even though you may feel that the other person's point of view may be right, you find it extremely difficult to admit that you could be wrong.

You feel that you need to move on. You feel that you are not appreciated or valued for what you are and that the time is 'now'. Failure to do so will not afford you the conditions to prove your worth.

Motivation

Ask any person who is successful in whatever he or she is doing what motivates him/her, and very likely the answer will be "goals". Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that's what your parents want, you may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it's possible to succeed with someone else providing the motivation for you. ("If you graduate from college, I'll give you a car!" or worse "If you don't graduate from college, you won't get a car.") But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.

Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if you don't have motivation, you won't get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior. There it sits. This car has incredible potential. (Have you heard that before?) However, until a driver sits behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition, and cranks it up, the car doesn't function. You guessed it; the KEY is MOTIVATION.

Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor leads to more interest and a greater desire to learn, creating an upward spiral of motivation toward a goal you have established.

So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.
